Learning Resources Pull Apart Counting Cows

The Learning Resources Pull Apart Counting Cows is a set of plastic cow figurines that can be pulled apart and put back together, each containing a number of beads for counting practice. The cows are brightly colored and designed to be easy for small hands to manipulate. The set includes 10 cows, each numbered 1-10 on one side and corresponding dots on the other, and can help young children develop their fine motor skills and hand-eye coordination. It is recommended for children aged 2 years and up.

How WE used it/What we liked

The little legs of the cow makes them less slippery and a bit easier to hold in a hand that doesn’t have full ability to close. Our daughter could usually squeeze items into her tight hemi hand even without the ability to open her hand properly, but they would often pull straight out. The legs helped avoid that happening as much. We would either get her to reach with her affected hand to hold, or help place it in her hand and get her to squeeze while pulling the toy apart, and putting back together.

Look out for

The only real critique that we had with these is that the “plug” where the items attach were VERY stiff/firm when we first got them, so if your child has limited grip strength in their weaker side they may struggle to hold them together when pulling apart/pushing in. A quick wriggle and slight pull apart before using helped increase success rates in our instance.
